Artist's Comments

A very early concept sketch of the third principle character from the Taralyn project, Ulysses. A literal iron horse, this steam-powered military mount has no idea whom he serves nor what his current directives are.

Initially this design was to be a steam-powered battering ram that appeared as a giant metal mountain goat, but I ran into some structural issues when doing the visual design as it looked far too much like the Warcraft ram mounts. Even so, this design is very preliminary, and there's a very good chance that future revisions may look a bit more like armored barding and less trainlike.

In Norse mythology, Sleipnir was Odin's six-legged horse from which this design was partially inspired, though it owes more to the late-1800s steam engine designs that used six drivewheels as opposed to four.

Reminds me of something I'd see in China Mieville's books.

Okay, what's the angle here? Ulysses S. Grant wasn't the one known as "Old Ironsides", and neither "Merrimac" nor "Monitor" refer to horses...

Give us a hint? :P

Sleipnir has eight legs.

Anyhoo, I'd downplay or lose the cowcatcher. Alter the neck so that it comes out of the front or top-front corner of the boiler. Maybe put the cylinders and rods inside of the leg mechanism. Or check out the other great steam vehicle of the 19th century, the steam tractor, coming to an Old Timer's Thresher and Antique Show near you.

Hopefully, they'll be big busty muscle women in your new comic.
